Library and Information Science: A Gateway to Knowledge Management Careers

It was one of those experiences that leaves a lasting impression — not only for what I had the opportunity to share, but also for what I gained in return. My recent visit to Tumkur University to deliver a lecture on “Library and Information Science as a Gateway to Knowledge Management Careers” as part of the Saturday Mirror Special Lecture Series on 19 April 2025 was a truly memorable and enriching experience.

The Saturday Mirror Series, initiated in 2016 by the Department of Library and Information Science, has evolved into a distinguished academic platform that brings together scholars, practitioners, and students to explore emerging ideas shaping our discipline. Over the years, it has hosted more than 36 lectures, each adding a unique layer to the intellectual fabric of the LIS community. Being invited as a speaker in such a prestigious series was both an honour and a privilege.

From the moment I stepped onto the campus, there was an unmistakable sense of academic energy and warmth. The faculty and students had cultivated an environment that celebrated learning, curiosity, and meaningful dialogue. My session focused on how Library and Information Science (LIS) is evolving beyond traditional roles — paving new pathways into knowledge management, digital innovation, and information governance.

As I spoke about the transformative role of LIS professionals in today’s knowledge-driven world, what truly stood out was the level of engagement from the audience. The students and research scholars participated with enthusiasm — asking insightful questions, sharing their perspectives, and reflecting deeply on the changing identity of librarianship. Their curiosity and openness to explore new professional horizons reaffirmed my belief that the next generation of LIS professionals is prepared to lead with both vision and adaptability.

The discussion naturally flowed from the foundations of librarianship to the interdisciplinary nature of modern information management — connecting the principles of organisation, access, and dissemination with the evolving demands of the digital era. It was inspiring to witness how these young minds viewed libraries not merely as repositories of information, but as dynamic spaces for knowledge creation, collaboration, and innovation.

I extend my sincere gratitude to Prof. B. T. Sampath Kumar and the organising team for their impeccable coordination, warm hospitality, and for honouring me with a Letter of Appreciation. My heartfelt thanks also go to the respected faculty members — Prof. Keshava, Prof. Rupesh Kumar A., Prof. Hemavathi B. N., and Prof. Rajendra Babu H. — for their gracious presence and encouragement throughout the event. Their collective commitment continues to foster an inspiring academic environment for students and scholars alike.

As I reflect on this enriching experience, I am reminded that Library and Information Science is not merely a discipline — it is a bridge between knowledge and people, tradition and innovation, past and future. The Saturday Mirror platform exemplifies this spirit, nurturing a generation of professionals who will carry forward the values of learning, sharing, and service into an ever-evolving information landscape.

I leave Tumkur University with a deep sense of gratitude — for the conversations, the curiosity, and the unwavering commitment to knowledge that I witnessed. It was not just a lecture, but a shared journey of discovery — one that reaffirmed my faith in the transformative power and enduring relevance of our profession.
